Leadership Allegany

Small groups meet to plan their industry day and county service project. Pictured are (L-R) Virginia Elliott, Odeney Carty, and Rebecca Scott.

Fourteen adult professionals from throughout Allegany County came together on April 30, 2010, marking the beginning of an exciting new program for our region. Leadership Allegany – a joint initiative of Houghton College and the Greater Allegany County Chamber of Commerce – offers a dynamic 10-month leadership training program for individuals who live, work, or have a vested interest in Allegany County.

Students participate in an opening retreat which includes icebreaker exercises, a thorough orientation, and participation in the Wilderness Adventures Ropes Course at Houghton. Students also spend time in small groups to begin discussion on their two main assignments for the year – planning an industry day session and implementing a service project to benefit the county.

During the remaining months of the program, students participate in regular curriculum and industry day sessions. They learn about the Social Change Model for Leadership and explore strength-based leadership as it applies to oneself and to groups or corporations. They also create a personal leadership development plan. At industry day sessions, participations gain an in-depth, insider's view of the industries important to Allegany County – such as agriculture, healthcare, government, etc. – and hear from top leaders in each of those industries.

On February 18, 2011, the inaugural class of Leadership Allegany will accept their graduation certificates at a special ceremony and dinner at Moonwinks Restaurant in Cuba, NY. The keynote speaker will be Senator Catharine Young.

We are currently recruiting students for the 2011-2012 year. For more information, call Pamela Witter at 585-567-9558 or email pamela.witter@houghton.edu. Annual sponsorships of $750 cover the cost of one participant or can provide a scholarship for a local business owner or emerging leader.
