Professional Expertise:
I have had the opportunity to work both in the U.S. and overseas with diverse learning populations in both urban and rural settings. As a literacy specialist with SIL International, I was able to provide literacy-related consultation to linguists working among East Asia’s minority language communities. As a literacy coach for Boston Public Schools and the Indiana Rural Literacy Initiative, I was able to provide professional development for regular, bilingual, and special education teachers, helping them better understand and improve their teaching of reading and writing. I began my career teaching elementary school and then spent three years teaching Reading and Language Arts courses to pre-service teachers at Indiana University.
Research Interests:
My research interests center on the reading and writing development of young children, especially those who are English language learners (ELLs). I am interested in helping classroom teachers most effectively address the needs of ELLs.
