Director of the Center for Academic Success and Advising (CASA)

Full time.  Non-tenure track.  August 2012.

Houghton College seeks a full-time Director to bring vision to and develop our newly constituted Center for Academic Success and Advising (CASA, formerly Student Academic Services). The Center serves the academic needs of students with disability challenges and those who need help adjusting to the demands of collegiate study, and seeks to promote the academic success of all students through attention to formal and informal academic advising. The Director, initially reporting to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, is expected to advocate for best practices in the area of student academic success.

This 10-month (August-May), non-tenure track position commences August 1, 2012.

The Director will have faculty status.  Salary and faculty rank determined based upon qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Envision and develop the Center to serve broadly integrative student success needs and goals
  • Work closely with a wide variety of directors, deans, and offices in the academic, student life, and enrollment management areas to promote academic success for all students of the College
  • Supervise the professional and student staff of the Center, including undergraduate psychology interns
  • Serve as the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 (Rehabilitation Act of 1973) compliance officer and advisor for the College with regard to student issues.
  • Counsel and educate students, faculty, staff and administrators regarding disabilities issues that impact learning and/or student success.
  • May teach the College’s Study Methods class, and optionally teach in his or her area of expertise

Qualifications: 

  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in education, psychology or related/combined field(s)
  • Able to interpret student disabilities reports from a variety of sources (medical staff, educational psychologists, counselors, etc.) and formulate appropriate accommodation letters
  • Able to communicate effectively and graciously with a wide variety of constituents, including students, parents, faculty, administrators, and staff
  • Management ability including budget, personnel, equipment and facilities oversight

Preferred qualifications:

  • Able to directly diagnose student disabilities that impact learning, including the administering of psychometric and/or psycho-educational tests
  • Supervisory experience
  • College teaching experience
  • Experience with collegiate academic advising
