Department Policy on Time on Task

In accordance with the Houghton college policy on awarding of academic credit hours through coursework, the Mathematics & Computer Science Department has agreed on the following minimum expectations for time on task.  The learning activities listed below are expected to occur outside of instructional time and accrue to a minimum of 30 hours outside of class for each credit hour.  Guidelines specific to the department are marked with a *.

*Assigned reading-technical  7 minutes per page
Assigned reading-popular or trade book 3 minutes per page (approx. 100 words per minute)
*Preparing problems for class 30 minutes/class
*Problem solving

100 level classes: 4 hours/weekly assignment
Upper level classes: 5 hours/weekly assignment 

*Going over notes 30 minutes per class
*Studying for quiz/test Twice the length of the assignment
*Discussing problems, office hours & help sessions 1 hour/week
*Projects IS courses: 1 hour/week
Semester long projects: 1.5 hours/week 
Journal/personal and science lab report writing 0.5 hours per page of writing (approximately 250 words)
Participating in online dialogue(s) 1 hour for 5 postings (original or in response to other posters), each of which consists of at least 5 sentences or 30 seconds of recorded material
Researched paper or presentation (live or recorded, individual or group):research component 1.5 hours per finished page or per 30 seconds of live/recorded presentation
Researched paper: writing/editing component 1.5 hours per finished page
Researched paper or presentation (live or recorded, individual or group): preparation component 2 hours per 30 seconds of live/recorded presentation
