Symphonic Winds Ensemble Performs Mini-tour

Houghton College’s Symphonic Winds ensemble embarked on a mini-tour over the weekend of Thursday, March 23- 25.  The tour aimed to expose its audiences to the highest quality music written for wind and percussion instruments.

In Emporium, Pa., the ensemble performed a free concert for Cameron County Central School, under the direction of Dr. Brian Casey. Approximately 200 people attended the concert, which was followed by a clinic session conducted by Dr. Casey for the high school band and a solo saxophone performance by Cameron County alumnus Amanda Pries ‘14.

“Our kids are still buzzing about what a great experience it was and how impressed they were,” said Mr. Daniel Sensenig, who served as host for the event alongside the high school band.

The Symphonic Winds ensemble, conducted by Dr. Brian Casey and graduate conductors Ethan Hall and Rachel Smith, is comprised of 65 percent music majors and 35 percent non-music majors.  The 2011-2012 season has thus far included works by Robert Russell Bennett, Vincent Perischetti, Donald Grantham, Alfred Reed, Jason Nitsch, David Maslanka, William Schuman, Davide Delle Cese, and Fisher Tull.
