Symphonic Winds Presents “This Land”
Houghton College’s Symphonic Winds will present “This Land,” a musical celebration of American culture and tradition, under the direction of Dr. Brian Casey on Saturday November 5, 2011 at 8 p.m. in Wesley Chapel. This event is free and open to the public.
“This Land” will feature the works of several American composers including Vincent Persichetti, Joseph Wilcox Jenkins, Donald Grantham, and Timothy Broege. Two movements of Casey’s work based on the Civil War-era melodies of Stephen Foster will be premiered, and also Kenneth Singleton’s arrangement of some of Aaron Copland’s music from the 1940 film Our Town will also be performed. Carmen Dragon’s moving, powerful rendition of “America the Beautiful” will close the concert.
Symphonic Winds is pleased to welcome back guest conductor Gary Stith. Stith will be conducting movements from “Suite of Old American Dances” by Robert Russell Bennett. Graduate Assistant Conductor Ethan Hall will conduct two works on the program.
Symphonic Winds is a group of 60-70 musicians comprised of mostly college students, both music majors and non-music majors alike.
