After 25 years of Silence... Pep Band is Making Noise!
Houghton College welcomed back their Pep Band after 25 years of silence with a debut at the basketball games between Houghton College and Alfred University on Friday, February 8, 2013. The Pep Band played at both the men’s and women’s basketball games, with the men’s team winning a close game in overtime.
The Pep Band is directed by Justin Davis, interim director of instrumental activities, and is a team endeavor between the Athletics Department and the Greatbatch School of Music.
“School spirit is necessary at any college campus,” says Davis. “The Pep Band’s mission is to add some more spirit for our basketball team, community and Houghton College. Our crowds at the games I have attended are excited and passionate, and we want to join with them to cheer on the Highlanders!”
Coach “Skip” Lord agreed, saying, “The Pep Band… did an amazing job at the games on Saturday…The positive feedback and enthusiasm has not waned. I can’t count how many people have told me how much they appreciated the band and how much it added to the atmosphere. I trust that this is just the beginning of a wonderful partnership moving forward.”
Rachel Smith, assistant graduate conductor for Symphonic Winds and Philharmonia, also commented on the experience saying, “Many of us had played in pep band in high school, but it was great to hear and participate in the music being played by quality musicians. It was…exciting to bring together the often-separated worlds of music and sports!”
Professor Davis is working to reach other areas of the college with instrumental music, and hopes that this is just one more way for non-music majors to get involved. “Pep bands can provide access to music making for all students, regardless of major, and have fun doing it!”
