Alumna Laura White ’13 Receives Book Contract from Harper Voyager Press
Houghton College is pleased to announce that alumna Laura White ’13 of Warren, PA has received her first book contract from Harper Voyager press.
White’s book, titled, “Heartstone,” was pitched as a Pride and Prejudice retelling with dragons, wyverns, gryphons and one very haughty dragon-rider the heroine most certainly dislikes.
This novel will be released in January of 2017 by Harper Voyager press, home of fantasy and science fiction at HarperCollins Publishers under White’s pen name, Elle Katharine White.
“Great stories are what I’m passionate about, and publishing ‘Heartstone’ is a chance to start sharing that love of story with the world,” commented White.
The publication process for “Heartstone” started back in May, when White sent her completed manuscript to her agent for review.
After a two-month submission process, White closed a deal with Voyage in early July.
While White waits for the book edits, she is working with her editor and the Voyager marketing team to publicize the book and build momentum until the release date.
White commented, “I live and breathe for the day when I can say I’m a full-time writer.”
When she is not writing, White spends her days working as the marketing manager at McKissock LP, a company that sells continuing education for licensed appraisal professionals.
“If I’ve learned one thing on this journey to publication, it’s that, to write professionally, you have to write like it’s your job,” said White. “So right now, I tell people I have two full-time jobs: one that starts at 9 a.m. and one that starts at 5 p.m.”
White was a 2013 communications major and the co-Valedictorian of the class of 2013 at Houghton College.
During her time at Houghton, she was the layout editor for the yearbook, the teacher’s assistant for the communications department, and a marketing assistant at Career Services. Her father, David White, is on the college’s alumni board and is a college trustee.
HarperCollins Publishers is the second-largest consumer book publisher in the world and is located in New York, N.Y.
