International soloist and clinician Otis Murphy, professor of saxophone at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, will perform at Houghton College on November 3, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. He returns to Houghton this year as part of the 2017-2018 Artist Series, having dazzled a crowd of students, faculty members, and community members two years ago.
Murphy has gained recognition as a soloist in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia, performing in some of the great concert halls of the world. He has presented saxophone classes and appeared as a guest professor at prestigious music schools and festivals in Germany, Japan, Spain, Australia, Great Britain, and the United States.
Murphy is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Adolphe Sax International Saxophone Competition in Belgium, the Jean-Marie Londeix International Saxophone Competition in France, and the Heida Hermanns International Woodwind Competition in the United States. Additionally, he has received the S & R Foundation’s Washington Award and its Ambassador Award for his work between American and Japanese musicians. Murphy’s 15 recordings have all received critical acclaim.
