It is believed that Gregory Young, a 21-year-old student from North Carolina in his junior year at Houghton College, took his own life this past Saturday, February 23.

While a body has not yet been recovered, strong circumstantial evidence suggests that Young took his own life by entering the Niagara River above the falls on Saturday evening.

“We are shocked and deeply saddened by the untimely loss to our community,” said Houghton College president, Shirley Mullen. “Greg Young was an accomplished young scholar with a promising future in theological study. Our prayers are with his family and his many friends and colleagues in these difficult days.”

Houghton sends its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Gregory Young.

Vice President for Student Life Rob Pool said, “Student life staff, in conjunction with faculty and community members, are reaching out to those most closely connected to Greg. A special chapel is planned for today at the regular time of 11:30 a.m.  Also, the Counseling Center will offer extended hours Monday night for those struggling through this very difficult time.”

Counselors and student life staff stand ready to assist students, faculty and staff who are grieving this news.
