In the context of its 2017 Homecoming celebration, Houghton College launched the public phase of a $70 million multi-year comprehensive campaign at a kickoff dinner on Friday evening, October 7. IMPACT: The Campaign for Greater Houghton will advance Houghton’s capacity for global impact, building on its 134-year tradition of equipping aspiring students with the knowledge and passion to change the world. To date the college has raised $45.52 million during the leadership phase toward the $70 million goal.

If you have ever visited the Houghton College Library, there is a good chance you’ve run into the friendly and ever-helpful Brad Wilber. Wilber works at Houghton as a reference librarian, but he is also known for his work as the crossword editor for the Chronicle of Higher Education. He is the arbiter of the puzzles, accepting, rejecting and editing submissions for each edition. He began working for the Chronicle in April of 2014, but crosswords have been a part of his life since boyhood.

Glen Avery—slight and intense, but serene— has a saying he repeats to himself when the discomfort begins to well in his calves and thighs: “I am running with my mind; the legs are just along for the ride.” Disassociation, for marathons, is key. “All of a sudden, it’s outside of yourself, outside of your brain,” he says. He raises his arm and looks at the crook on the inside of his elbow. “Oh, it’s a bubble of discomfort.”

Audiences were first introduced to the ice planet of Hotth in Star Wars Episode V, which featured an icy terrain with a mixture of cleverly disguised miniatures on the Hardangerjokulen glacier in Finse, Norway. For the upcoming movie, Star Wars Episode VIII, however, scenes for Hotth will potentially be filmed at Houghton College, a rural liberal arts school in New York State.

March 2016 - Tranchell '17 Selected for Elite Choral Conducting Masterclass

In January, Houghton graduate student Alessio Tranchell ’17 traveled to New York City to take part in a national choral conducting masterclass helmed by renowned conductor and composer René Clausen. There, he worked one on one with Clausen and other conductors on Johann Sebastian Bach’s orchestra-choir masterwork, “Magnificat,” which was performed later in the weekend.

This past December, Houghton College sustainability coordinator Brian Webb and Houghton senior Lauren Bechtel travelled to Paris for the 21st meeting of the Conference of Parties (COP21), a climate change conference that included delegates from 195 nations and was held between Nov. 30 and Dec. 11. The conference aimed to create an international climate agreement applicable to every country worldwide.

When Kirby Runyon ’08 was a kid, Pluto was a planet. You remember Pluto, right? In the acronym taught to elementary kids to help them memorize the (then) nine planets, Pluto stood for “Pizzas.” (“My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas.”) Pluto became the talk of the astronomical world in 2006 when its distinction as a planet was called into question. The little-planet-that-could was eventually demoted to the un-esteemed status of “dwarf planet” by the International Astronomical Union, “the self-proclaimed authority in naming stuff,” accuses Kirby.

Houghton College graduate Elizabeth Wallace ’14 and Dr. Sunshine Sullivan, chair for the education department at Houghton, have co-published an honors project in Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning, the journal of the New York Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. Their article, “Evolving Reflections: A Narrative Inquiry of an Emerging Educator,” will appear in the journal’s Fall 2015/Winter 2016 issue. The article is the culmination of two years’ worth of collaboration.

Houghton College’s April Fools announcement that $84 million was raised to build a bio-dome over the campus created quite a media buzz. The colleges PR department released the fabricated news story one day early with the hopes of possibly getting some media outlets to play along. The strategy proved to be a success as many news outlets including radio and TV stations ran with the article as a legitimate news story. Within a couple hours of the release, however, the media was on to the day-early hoax and reposted the story with “April Fools” headlines.

During the spring 2014 semester, 14 Houghton students (and others from Wheaton and Westmont colleges) conducted research in villages outside Ruaha National Park in Tanzania to gain insight on the continual conflict between the national park and the locals who illegally hunt big game. This research was part of the annual Houghton in Tanzania semester led by Dr. Eli Knapp, assistant professor of intercultural studies, biology and earth science at Houghton.

Houghton College is pleased to announce that Marc Smithers, interim director of resident life and housing, has been promoted to the director of residence life and housing. Smithers was appointed interim director in August and has since led the department with a highly creative and collaborative ethos. When asked about Smithers leadership style, one resident director (RD) reported that “Marc has a clear vision for residence life.” Another stated, “He has the ability to step back and see what we are doing and why we are doing it.” In his continued role, Smithers will provide leadership to a staff of five full-time RDs, one Assistant RD and 35 Resident Assistants.

Houghton College is pleased to announce a new book by professor emeritus Jon Arensen. The book, “The Red Pelican: Life on Africa’s Last Frontier,” is the third in an unofficial trilogy by Arensen about the South Sudan. It follows the work and ministry of Dick Lyth, British military officer assigned to fight against the Italian army during World War II. After the war, he was District Commissioner for the Sudanese government, living with the indigenous Murle people and learning their language and culture.

Houghton’s on-campus coffee house, Java 101, has closed, and a new coffee house opened this past Tuesday in the same location, managed by the Houghton Dining Services (Sodexo in partnership with Starbucks). Former owner Greg Bish had informed the college of his desire to no longer operate the shop and closed the doors of Java 101 in July.

The seminar was held in conjunction with an exhibition of rare traveling masterpieces of Dutch art featuring works by Vermeer, Hals, and Rembrandt. The exhibition, Girl with a Pearl Earring: Dutch Paintings from the Mauritshuis, is on view at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia, and began in June 2013.

While humans must consume in order to survive, the environment must survive in order for us to consume, in light of this, the question of sustainability arises: how do we meet current needs without jeopardizing the future? While attention aimed at this predicament is increasing, its levels remain low within the Christian community. Houghton has stepped outside this trend, partnering with other leading Christian colleges in order to pursue future environmental stability. The Symposium for Sustainability Leaders provides a networking opportunity for representatives from these colleges and organizations to exchange ideas for furthering a long-term approach to the natural world.

Sarah Graham ‘05 has established a successful career as a watercolor artist since her graduation from Houghton College. She has earned national recognition in the field over the past year and continues to find new opportunities to display her art work. Sarah Graham’s most recent display, a solo artist exhibition, opened on November 8 at the Desoto City Hall in Texas. Sarah is particularly known for a sensitive touch with watercolors, especially her portraits. She travels extensively, translating what she sees onto paper. In addition to receiving national and regional recognition for her work in competitive art shows, Sarah is sought as a guest demo artist, curator, and juror. She also teaches high school art and private lessons, always finding her students to be a source of inspiration.

Anne Nickerson ‘13 loves music. A music composition major with a concentration in voice, she’s been improvising on the piano for as long as she can remember. However, Anne only started composing during her late high school years and did not really consider composition as a future path. As a senior, prepared to study fashion design, Anne attended a retreat that changed her mind and suddenly was sure that music composition was the career path she wanted to take.

Houghton College recently approved the final site for the new Kerr-Pegula Sports Complex. A feasibility study which was requested by the Board of Trustees and conducted by Keystone Associates took into consideration two possible sites: one located on the east side of route 19 across the street from the college, and the other located on the west side of route 19 adjacent to Burke Field and the existing Alumni Athletic Complex.

A day will come when Princesse Nabintu, a current senior at Houghton College, will see her little sister again. Painfully, Princesse recalls the Gatumba Massacre that claimed the lives of her sister, close relatives and friends. Emotively, she relays the discriminations she faced as a Congolese Tutsi during the civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In early March, Stan Gabriel ’11, Kaylin Bull ’11 and Amara Graham ’13 traveled with Dr. Ndunge Kiiti ’88, professor of intercultural studies, to Alabama to walk the path of the Civil Rights Movement.
