Houghton University Named a Best North, Liberal Arts College

September 10, 2018

Washington Monthly magazine has named Houghton University to its Best Bang for the Buck – North and National Universities – Liberal Arts rankings.

Houghton ranked 47th out of the 400 institutions on the Best Bang for the Buck – North listing. The college ranked second among the 13 Western New York Consortium of Higher Education institutions that made the list, and first among the nine Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) member colleges and universities included.

The Best Bang for your Buck list is of particular interest to low- or modest-income students looking for a marketable degree at an affordable price, based largely on the U.S. Department of Education’s College Scorecard tool.

Houghton was also listed in the magazine’s National Universities – Liberal Arts ranking, coming in at 66th out of 228 liberal arts colleges in the nation. Of those, Houghton ranked first among the eight CCCU member schools, and was the only WNY Consortium school included.

Washington Monthly’s methodology includes, among more traditional factors such as graduation rate and research, unique ranking criteria such as social mobility (first-generation status, ethnic/racial and gender makeup, residential vs. urban etc.), performance rank of the institution’s Pell grant recipients, and even service rank, which focuses mainly on the institution’s commitment to supporting community service.
