Houghton College was recently selected as a featured institution in the Colleges of Distinction 2017 Guidebook, included in both the New York and Christian institution lists for its innovative application of high impact educational practices.
This process includes a review of each institution’s freshman experience, as well as its general education program, strategic plan, and alumni success and satisfaction measures.
The selected schools must demonstrate excellence in four distinct areas:
- Student engagement, demonstrated at Houghton through study abroad and a Summer Research Institute ranking in the top 50 in the country (Best College Reviews).
- Vibrant community, as seen in the multitude of sports ministry and ministry opportunities as well as an appreciation for athletics.
- Great teaching, in the classroom, in honors programs (including transfer student honors), and in the Center for Data Science Analytics.
- Successful outcomes, as seen in Houghton’s Vocational Opportunities and Career Advising (VOCA) Center.
Nominated colleges that demonstrate dedication to enriching student outcomes through innovative learning opportunities are invited to join.
Houghton College President Shirley Mullen stated that “We are delighted to have Houghton included among the Colleges of Distinction. The qualities recognized in featured institutions match Houghton's strengths exactly. Our outstanding retention and placement rates confirm both the high quality of our education inside and outside the classroom, as well as the successful transition of our graduates into graduate and professional schools or the workplace.”
Since 1999, the Colleges of Distinction website and guidebook have recognized and honored schools throughout the U.S. for excellence in undergraduate-focused higher education.
