Houghton College hosted a retirement and recognition event on Tuesday, April 22, to honor 27 faculty and staff members who have given ten or more years of service, two staff members who received special award citations and one staff member who retired.
The annual event featured a dessert reception and an a cappella performance by the Houghton Singers under the direction of Kevin Dibble, assistant director of choral activates at Houghton. The event began with a welcome by Linda Mills Woolsey, dean of the college and followed with remarks by President Shirley Mullen.
Among the honorees, retiring employee Don Taylor was honored for his 39 years of service to Houghton College as a custodian. During his tenure, Taylor has overseen the direction of more than 1,000 student workers. Andrew Cahill, custodial manager for Houghton, commented to Taylor’s dedication not only to performing the expected duties of his job with excellence and humility, but also to his serving as a mentor in Christ to both students and staff as well.
Two awards were cited during the event, the Mary Boomhower Staff Excellence Award and the Ken Boon Community Service Award.
The recipient of the Mary Boomhower Staff Excellence Award was given to Eileen DeBoer. This award honors a Houghton staff member who exemplifies a commitment to the Christian life through a vibrant Christian walk, cheerful spirit and servant’s heart, through exemplary service, and has been employed by the college for at least ten years.
