Houghton Welcomes New Faculty Members

New Houghton Faculty

Houghton College welcomes 11 new faculty members this fall. The new educators will prepare Houghton graduates to enter the world, eager to transform and inspire. Among those joining the faculty are Fasil Abebe, Michael Ahland, Deborah Bruce, Martin Coates, Ryann Cooley, Patricia Gingras, Joo Young Hong, Mitchell Hutchings, Jeff L. Wiesman, John Wise, Justin Davis and Bretta Hixson.

Fasil Abebe joins Houghton as the interim assistant professor of chemistry. Abebe holds a Master’s of Science from Addis Ababa University and earned his Doctor of Chemistry from Western Michigan University.  Abebe previously worked as a postdoctoral associate at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Michael Ahland will be taking the position of assistant professor of linguistics/TESOL.  Ahland comes to Houghton from a previous position with Wycliffe Bible Translators and SIL International (18 years and continuing).  He has a Master of Arts in linguistics from the University of Texas and a Doctor of Linguistics from the University of Oregon.

Deborah Bruce is filling the position of assistant professor of literacy.  Bruce has both a master of Arts in secondary English education and a doctorate in education from Kent State University.  Previously, she was an adjunct faculty member in the Graduate College of Education at the University of Buffalo.

Martin Coates was previously the curriculum coordinator with the Upward Bound program at Houghton College.  In his new position, he is assistant professor of education and field placement coordinator.  Coates has a Master of Arts in mathematics from SUNY Brockport.

Ryann Cooley is assuming the position of associate professor of digital media and photography.  He earned a master of fine arts in photography, video and related media from the School of Visual Arts in New York, N.Y.  He also served as adjunct faculty at the same institution.

Patricia Gingras will be the new assistant professor and coordinator of music education.  Gingras was previously the program coordinator for the early childhood music program at the Eastman Community Music School in Rochester, N.Y.  She has a Master of Music from the University of Mexico and a doctorate in music education from the Eastman School of Music.

Joo Young Hong is a new assistant professor of education.  Hong has a doctoral degree in special education from the University of Kansas.

Mitchell Hutchings is a new assistant professor of voice and opera.  He has a master’s degree in vocal performance from Florida State University and was the voice instructor at the University of West Florida.

We welcome Jeff L Wiesman as an associate professor of education.  Wiesman previously taught mathematics at both Wheaton Warrenville South High School and Aurora University. He holds a Master of Arts in curriculum and instruction from North Central College and a doctoral degree in education in curriculum and instruction from Aurora University.

John Wise will be the director of institutional research and assessment.  Wise has both a Master and Doctor of Science in instructional systems from Pennsylvania State University and was previously the director of instructional design and assessment for the STEM Scouts Initiative at the College of Education, The Pennsylvania State University.

Justin Davis joined the Houghton faculty this past sping in the position of interim director of instrumental music.  Davis holds a Master of Music in Wind Conducting with a cognate in music education from Western Illinois University.

Lastly, Bretta Hixson is taking the position of interim instructor of biology.  She holds a master’s in public health with a concentration in international health from the Boston University School of Public Health.  She was previously the special projects coordinator at the Konbit Santé Cap-Haitian Health Partnership in Cap-Haitien, Haiti.
