Houghton College’s Sodexo culinary team took first place this past Wednesday, April 3, in a round against Hobart and William Smith Colleges and Niagara University at the 2013 Chef’s Fare, sponsored by Sodexo and hosted in the campus dining hall. Houghton’s Sodexo team will compete again at Niagara University next week.

The competition was fierce; 16% of diners voted for Hobart and William Smith Colleges, 36% for Niagara University, and 48% voted for Houghton College.

The competition features nine culinary teams from college and university campus resident dining locations from across western New York. Music genres, such as big band, rap, and rock, are assigned to a college team, which then creates displays and costumes in conjunction with their music genre. The championship competition is to be held in May.

This year’s event theme is music genres, and combines themed music with traveling food displays.

“It allows the various chefs to use their creativity to create different dishes around a common theme,” explains Houghton’s catering manager James Ward.

Hobart and William Smith College represented holiday music, Niagara University featured big band and Houghton College’s Sodexo team, Lil’ Gill’s Gang, feature rap.

Houghton’s executive chef and competitor Terry Gill says of Chef’s Fare, “It's great to host this event that brings together three of the most influential things to Houghton College -- music, food and the all-encompassing power and atmosphere of Jesus Christ.”

Chef’s Fare is a recently developed annual event from Sodexo. It was conceived in the Southeast Ernie Minor region. Every year Sodexo’s regional marketing director and account representatives pick and assign a theme around which dishes are created. Last year’s theme was film, and one such assignment was a Harry Potter-themed meal.

This year’s theme, music genres, includes country western, 1980s pop revival, Italia, and more.

Ward concludes, “It was a fun and exciting night.”
