Houghton College is pleased to announce that Marc Smithers, interim director of resident life and housing, has been promoted to the director of residence life and housing. Smithers was appointed interim director in August and has since led the department with a highly creative and collaborative ethos. When asked about Smithers' leadership style, one resident director (RD) reported that “Marc has a clear vision for residence life.” Another stated, “He has the ability to step back and see what we are doing and why we are doing it.” In his continued role, Smithers will provide leadership to a staff of five full-time RDs, one assistant RD and 35 resident assistants.
Upon graduating from Houghton in 2008 as a political science major, Smithers served as the discipleship and family ministries director for the Akron First United Methodist Church in Akron, N.Y. During that time, he married Ailie (Kilpatrick) '09, who graduated from Houghton with a degree in English. He and his wife will be celebrating five years of marriage in January, four of which were recently spent in Rothenbuhler Hall, where Smithers served as the RD. Smithers earned his master’s degree in higher education in May from Geneva College, where he also received the MAHE Scholarship Award. Both he and his wife are excited to continue raising their two year old daughter, Greta, in the Houghton community.
