Houghton’s on-campus coffee house, Java 101, has closed, and a new coffee house opened this past Tuesday in the same location, managed by the Houghton Dining Services (Sodexo-in partnership with Starbucks).

Former owner Greg Bish had informed the college of his desire to no longer operate the shop and closed the doors of Java 101 in July. “The whole Java 101 family wants to thank everyone for their support over the years, it has been a great experience.  Wishing all the students, faculty, staff, and community members a great start to the new year,” said Bish and Java 101 staff.

A sale of Java 101’s equipment, select furniture and remaining inventory took place this past weekend.

“The new coffee house [currently unnamed] will feature fresh-baked bakery items made daily, as well as premium and specialty coffees,” said Tina Powers, general manager for Sodexo and Houghton Dining Services.  “Once students are back on campus we will announce a naming contest with a grand prize to the winner who suggested the winning chosen name.”

“Sodexo has a long and rich tradition of operating high-end coffee shop concepts worldwide,” said Rob Pool, vice president of student life.  “I am grateful that Sodexo rallied the troops quickly to ensure this important part of our campus life continued uninterrupted.”

Houghton Dining Services will add the coffee house to its already-in-place offerings of the main dining hall, Sandella's and Big Al’s (a restaurant / grill that is located in the bottom of the student center next to the coffee house).

The new coffee house already opened this past Tuesday.  Hours of operation for this week are:  Tuesday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.  Starting the first day of classes, hours will be: weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., and weekends from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Students will also enjoy the convenience of being able to use their Flex and Big Al Bucks in the coffee house, which previously was not an option, once the new point of sale registers are installed.  A fall promotion for BONUS Bucks will be offered at the beginning of the academic school year.
