Houghton College is pleased to welcome Dr. Rob Pool as the new vice president for student life. He will don this new responsibility within the Houghton community on January 2, 2013.
Dr. Pool has been prepared for this capacity of service through both his work experience and education. Since 2007, he has been serving as the director of student activities at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Prior to that, he gained experience through service in various student life positions at the University of Evansville and Southeast Missouri State University.
Modeling the diversity of knowledge encouraged by a liberal arts education like that which Houghton provides, Dr. Pool has a variety of academic degrees and interests. After achieving his undergraduate degree in philosophy and speech communication, Dr. Pool received his M.A. in counseling and higher education administration and his Ph.D. in higher education and leadership.
Linda Mills Woolsey, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college, spoke optimistically of Dr. Pool, “I look forward to working with Dr. Pool on finding effective ways to coordinate co-curricular and curricular programs to provide our students with the best possible preparation for living out their callings in work and life,” she noted. "Alongside a strong understanding of liberal arts education, his deep Christian commitment is evident and is coupled with experience with institutions and programs outside the CCCU circle. This is an “out of the box” mix that should enable him to help us look at our programs and goals with fresh eyes. His training in and experience with leadership will be valuable, as the dean’s office and student life work together on projects that will help to prepare students for leadership and service in a complex world.”
The high hopes and expectations with which Houghton welcomes Dr. Pool are echoed by Dr. Mills Woolsey when she says, “I am delighted that an emerging leader of his caliber has accepted the invitation to work with us.”
