Houghton alumnus, James Orgar ‘70 has been awarded the awarded the statewide 2013 NYSBDA Outstanding Retired Band Director Award by the New York State Band Directors Association annual symposium.

Orgar was a music education major at Houghton.  He student taught in the Brighton Central Schools outside of Rochester where, upon the completion of his senior year, he was immediately offered a position on their instrumental music faculty.

He spent his entire 40- plus- year career with Brighton Central Schools.  Throughout his tenure he also served as president of the Monroe County Music Educators Association and the prestigious New York State School Music Association.

“By their example, the teaching staff at Houghton helped me to select or reject ideas that assisted me to formulate and then hone what would become my own teaching style and philosophy,” says Orgar.

Orgar also met his wife at Houghton, and they will celebrate their 41st year of marriage  this summer.
