US News & World Report Lists Houghton College as a Best National Liberal Arts College
On September 12, 2012, U.S. News & World Report released its lists of Best Colleges, ranking the schools within 10 defined classifications provided by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Houghton College is once again ranked among elite national liberal arts colleges.
Houghton’s rank in the “national” category is an important distinction that signifies the college’s reputation and academic achievements. It is also ranked in the first tier.
In order to rank the colleges, U.S. News first puts the college into a category based on its mission and/or location. Data from each school is then gathered in 16 areas regarding academic excellence, and each area holds a certain weight (as a percentage). Finally, the colleges are ranked based on their composite weighted scores. [U.S. News & World Report]
“We are pleased to be recognized by U.S. News & World Report in their list of Best Liberal Arts Colleges,” said Linda Mills Woolsey, interim dean of the college. “This listing recognizes our commitment to offering a challenging liberal arts education that links theory and practice in a way that enables students to discover and develop their gifts. It is also a reminder that higher education grounded in Christian faith can offer a high-quality education competitive with the best schools in the nation.”
Houghton College was part of the “Liberal Arts Colleges” listing of 251 colleges that place emphasis on undergraduate education, and who award at least half of their degrees in the liberal arts. The guide includes ranks selected from approximately 1,600 accredited institutions in the United States.
