Houghton STUDENTs STUDYING IN
LONDON
ENGLAND
HOUGHTON, N.Y.
Fifteen Houghton College students spent their fall semesters overseas as part
of the Houghton in London program.
The students
studied a range of subjects including drama, art history, the history of
Christianity in Britain, Globalization, and Biblical studies. Most of the
courses were taught by British professors.
Students in
London confront a rich and diverse cultural experience, said Chris Stewart,
Houghtons associate professor of philosophy. As a context for studying, not
only Western culture but globalization phenomenon,
London
is an ideal center for study, said Stewart, who also serves as associate
director of the colleges London Program.
In addition to
their coursework, the students attended several theatrical plays and visited
various sites in England including Stonehenge, Bath, Brighton, Dover and Leeds
Castle. Additionally, some of the students made trips to France, Scotland,
Austria, Norway and Ireland.

students studied in London during the fall semester: Catherine Hubman from
Tonawanda, N.Y.; Gretelyn Button from Wellsville, N.Y.; Betsy Rutledge from
Hunt, N.Y.; Julia Kingsley from Brushton, N.Y.; Rachel Varughese from Mount
Vernon, Ohio; Rebecca Esposito from West Grove, Pa.; Gillian Derbyshire from
Kanata, ON, Canada; Adam Carman from Barton, N.Y.; Mark Lempke from
Gloversville, N.Y.; Charlotte Keniston from Meredith, N.H.; Abigail Hunt from
York, Pa.; Dan Fessenden from Harrisburg, Pa.; Melanie Lizauckas from Kenmore,
N.Y.; Emily Hale from Burnt Hills, N.Y.; and Jan Bowman from Fairfield, Conn.
Houghton has made
a commitment to providing off-campus learning opportunities for its students.
In addition to the fall London program, each spring semester the college takes
a select group of freshman to London as part of the rigorous Houghton Honors
Program. Houghton also offers semester-long programs in Tanzania (Africa),
Australia, the Adirondack State Park and Oregon.
