HOUGHTON ON
THE MOVE
HOUGHTON,
N.Y.
– Recently 84 Houghton College employees walked over 11,245 miles.
As part of their
wellness program, Houghton College initiated a Houghton on the Move challenge
to encourage employees to take charge of their health by becoming more active.
Twenty-one teams of four agreed to track their miles walked for six weeks.
Through the use of a pedometer results were calculated weekly for each team.
"From a doctor's perspective, it was great to see
everyone so enthusiastic about exercise; it sometimes takes something
structured like this to get people motivated. As a participant I can say that
there's definitely something more fun about walking when there are others doing
it with you. The 'team' aspect of the challenge was really helpful,” said Dr.
David Brubaker, director of student health services at Houghton College.
The winning team, which
walked over 962 miles, was awarded $300 which they donated to the American
Cancer Society and Royal Family Kids Camp, a summer camp for abused, neglected
and abandoned children.
