HOUGHTON OBSERVES CONSTITUTION DAY
HOUGHTON,
N.Y. —
Houghton College will observe Constitution Day with an evening lecture on
Monday, Sept. 19 at 8 p.m.
Observing this new
national holiday, Academic Vice President and Dean of the College Ronald
Oakerson will speak on “More than a Scrap of Paper? Reflections on the U.S.
Constitution” in the Recital Hall located in the Center for the Arts.
Oakerson also holds
a faculty appointment as a professor of political science. He is a former
member of the Task Force on Civil Education of the American Political Science
Association. He holds a bachelor’s from Taylor University and a master’s and
doctorate from
Indiana
University.
On
Sept. 17, 1787,
the 55 delegates to the Constitutional Convention held their final meeting.
Only one item of business occupied the agenda that day — signing the
Constitution of the
United States of America. Last year President George W. Bush signed a bill on
Dec. 8, 2004, designating Sept. 17 as Constitution Day.
The public is
welcome to attend this free lecture. The first 200 attendees will receive free
pocket copies of the Constitution.
