CHAMBERLAIN HONORED BY LOCAL COLLEGE PRESIDENTS
HOUGHTON,
N.Y. —
During a meeting of the Five-College Committee, Houghton College President
Daniel R. Chamberlain was honored for his 30 years of service and his upcoming
retirement with a special surprise presentation.
St.
Bonaventure University President Sr. Margaret Carney,
O.S.F., S.T.D., Alfred University President Charles Edmondson, Alfred
State College President Uma Gupta and Dean of the Olean campus of Jamestown
Community College Larry Sorokes presented Chamberlain with an orchid painting
entitled “Paphiopedilum rothschildianum” by local artist Carol Woodin.
In her presentation,
Sr. Margaret read part of the artist’s statement in which Woodin says “at first
glance botanical painting can seem to be somewhat anachronistic; it is a
painstakingly slow process requiring absolute attention to minute details. The
art form opens a window into a no longer common way of doing things, and coaxes
us into slowing down and really seeing.”
Sr. Margaret
commented that Chamberlain “too is anachronistic. Really seeing to the heart of
things that are reflected in the mission statement of Houghton College.”
Chamberlain thanked
the Five-College Committee for their service together and for being able to
“draw strength from lif e
around us.” He continued to comment that it was “a joy to see us work together,
to respect each other and to have a cooperative spirit in the best interest of
higher education.”
Paphiopedilum
rothschildianum, introduced into cultivation in 1887, is widely agreed
to be the most spectacular orchid in the genus. It is known to occur in the
wild only in Borneo, and has a very limited range. Woodin's rendition of this
beautiful species has been painstakingly printed at the Stinehour Press of
Vermont using a vintage Heidelburg press, and each print has been individually
hand embellished by the artist in watercolors. The edition is printed on 100%
rag Rising Gallery paper, and is limited to 250 pencil signed and numbered
impressions and 10 artist's proofs.
