RETIRED HOUGHTON
PROFESSOR PASSES AWAY
Former Houghton
College Professor Emeritus Dr. Kenneth Lindley passed away on Saturday, February 18 in
South
Jersey Hospital, Elmer. He was 81.
Lindley came to
Houghton
College in 1963 as a professor of physics and mathematics. He also served as
chairman of the division of science and mathematics. He taught at Houghton
until his retirement in 1989.
Visitation will be
at the Kopler-Williams Funeral Home in Fillmore on Thursday, February 23, from
2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. On Friday, February 24, visitation will take
place at the Houghton Wesleyan Church beginning at 9:00 a.m. with the funeral
beginning at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Wesley Oden will officiate. Burial will be in
Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Houghton.
Enlisting in the
U.S. Navy in World War II, Lindley studied at the College of St. Thomas and
later earned a bachelor’s from the University of Wisconsin. There he met his
future wife, Katherine Walberger, whom he married in 1948. Following discharge
from the Navy, he earned a master’s from the University of Wisconsin and began
his teaching career at South Dakota State College. In 1953 he earned his
doctorate from the University of Iowa.
Surviving besides
his wife, Katherine, are his children Lois Jordan of Pilesgrove, N.J., Margaret
Koch of Minneapolis, Minn., Eileen Williams of Newark, Del., and Mark Lindley
of Ann Arbor, Mich.; 14 beloved grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
