HOUGHTON HONORS STUDENT ARTISTS
HOUGHTON, N.Y. Nine
Houghton College students were honored recently for their artwork at the 17th
Annual Student Juried Art Exhibition awards ceremony.
Following are the award winners with their year and hometowns:
Best of Show
(The Ortlip Memorial Award) Kelsey Harro
(Senior/Schuylerville, N.Y.) Oil on canvas- "La
Suora," a small intimate portrait of a nun that the artist met on a
pilgrimage to the Pope's wake.
First Place
(The Paul Maxwell Memorial Award) Hi Uan Kang
(Senior/Loures, Portugal)
"Leaves," a large scale installation comprised of
leaf shaped pieces of clay, assembled into curtains using monofilament and
hardware.
Second Place
(Alumni Award) Daniel Fessenden
(Senior/Harrisburg, Pa.) "Look at Me," a small
scale photo etching printed monochromatically. The image is a self-portrait
of the artist.
Third Place
(The Moss Award) Stephanie Turner
(Junior/Saint Cloud, Fla.) "Under
Construction," digital photographs stitched into a
long panoramic image of construction in the interior of the Chapel, printed
in black and white using archival ink on a fine digital printmaking paper.
Honorable
Mention: 1.
Stefan Zoller (Sophomore/Houghton, N.Y.)
for a large scale, colorful abstraction painted in
oil.
2. Nancy Backus
(Freshman/Vienna, W.Va.) for "Apples," tall, boxed
shaped vessel made from stoneware clay and a high
fired glaze finish.

Michelle Mohr (Junior/Grove City, Pa.) for
"Violin," a digitally printed black and white photograph made from an image
the artist took in attempt to personify the object of the violin.
4.
Julia Waltz (Senior/Staunton, Va.) for
"Joey," a portrait in oil on canvas the artist created of a great likeness of
her friend.
5.
Paul Christensen (Senior/Houghton, N.Y.)
for "A Dry and Thirsty Jar, a stout, medium
scaled ceramic pot, heavily textured and manipulated.
Marie
Via, director of exhibitions at the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester,
judged this years
event.
