MASSEY RECEIVES COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
HOUGHTON,
N.Y.
— Charles Massey, professor of education at Houghton College, recently
received the 2006 Ken Boon Community Service Award.
Massey was
recognized for his service to the people of the city of Buffalo. His
unceasing efforts, often alongside his wife Claity, have yielded much
fruit—the Pastoral and Church Ministries Program, the King Urban-Life
Center, the service-learning program at Houghton, his well-known
“Teaching in Urban America” course, and beginning in the fall, the
Houghton College Center for Urban Programs in Buffalo.
The Ken Boon
Community Service Award was established in memory of Biology Professor
Ken Boon, who served for 24 years as the chief of the Houghton Volunteer
Fire Department. Its purpose is to recognize a Houghton College
employee who has excelled in community service, external to the college.
Ken Boon’s long and distinguished service as Houghton’s Fire Chief was
the motivating example of such service.
The first
award went to John Van Wicklin for his work with the Royal Family Kid’s
Camp and the second to Joyce Chamberlain for her 30 years of
behind-the-scenes service to the Houghton community.
