ALICE MATHEWS TO SPEAK DURING CLEW AT HOUGHTON COLLEGE

HOUGHTON, N.Y. — Dr. Alice Mathews, distinguished professor of educational ministries and women’s ministries at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, will speak during Houghton College’s Christian Life Emphasis Week (CLEW), Sept. 3-6.

Mathews is widely known for her participation in the daily Bible-teaching radio program “Discover the Word.” She is the author of “A Woman God Can Lead,”  “A Woman God Can Use,” “A Woman Jesus Can Teach,” and "Preaching that Speaks to Women."

Prior to teaching at Gordon-Conwell, Mathews spent more than a decade at Denver Seminary where in the 1980s she established a comprehensive program for women’s studies. Subsequently she served as dean of the Philadelphia Center of the Seminary of the East.

CLEW is a time of strengthening and renewal as Houghton College’s student body, faculty, staff and administration are drawn back to the purpose of Houghton College: to equip students to lead and labor as scholar-servants in a changing world.

CLEW begins on Sunday, Sept. 3 with a morning service at the Houghton Wesleyan Church (8:20, 9:40, or 11 a.m.) and an evening service at 6:30 p.m. at Wesley Chapel on the Houghton College campus. On Monday and Tuesday services are held at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. at Wesley Chapel. CLEW concludes with a service on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 11 a.m. at Wesley Chapel.

The public is welcome to attend all services. For more information call 585.567.9220.

Houghton College is located on Rt. 19 in Allegany County, 65 miles south of Buffalo and Rochester and 15 minutes from Letchworth State Park.
