HOUGHTON PROFESSOR WINS PEOPLE’S CHOICE VLOGGIE AWARD

HOUGHTON, N.Y. —Houghton College Assistant Professor of Visual Communication and Media Arts David Huth won a People’s Choice Vloggie Award.

Huth’s vlog, “90 Seconds of Dave,” was selected for the People’s Choice Award in the experimental category. His videoblog translates ideas, moments and bits of his life into 90-second segments of video.

Huth began podcasting in 2004 and heard a podcast about vlogging. “Intrigued, I Googled the word and kept poking around. Six hours later I was hooked,” said Huth. A videoblog is a portmanteau combining video, web and log (usually shortened to vlog). Vlogs are weblogs (or a streamlined distribution of video moving across the Internet) that use video and can be watched on the computer or downloaded to a portable device.

“Cultural communication and public discourse are undeniably dominated by television,” said Huth. “Tomorrow, TV as we know it may be gone, but I tend to think that moving pictures will still be the focus of whatever comes next. So I pay special attention to attempts at creating a new system of visual media.”

The Vloggie Awards recognize individual and business excellence in creativity, quality and delivery of online video content. The awards ceremony was held in San Francisco, but was fittingly podcasted for anytime-anywhere viewing.
