Houghton College Announces New Master’s in Theology
HOUGHTON, N.Y. —Houghton College announces a new master’s program in theological studies.
The Graduate Theological Studies program is “shaped by Houghton College’s heritage in the liberal arts and the Wesleyan Theological tradition,” said Michael Walters, chair of the religion and philosophy department at Houghton. “Whether using this degree for deepening one's skills for ministry, or as a preliminary step into doctoral studies, the master’s in theological studies offers students the opportunity to study with highly qualified and experienced faculty who have a passion for engaging our world for Christ.”
The program will consist of a 48 credit hour degree, with classes offered during the fall, spring and summer. The master’s program offers courses in “block” or “intensive” formats to accommodate students whose work or vocational responsibilities would not permit them to participate in a traditional, full-time residency program.
“We deliberately developed the master’s without the restrictions of sequencing which allows people to move in and out without falling behind,” said Walters.
Core requirements for the master’s in theological studies include six courses: Biblical Hermeneutics, Constructive Theology, Church History, Missional Ecclesiology, The Christian Spiritual Life and Theology, Faith and Culture. Students may choose six theology or Bible electives and four general electives. A six hour thesis option is also available.
An initial donation of a $1 million grant was used to establish this master’s program. Classes are projected to begin in the fall of 2008.
This is the second master’s degree program offered by Houghton College—The Greatbatch School of Music began awarding masters’ degrees in 2005.
