New Education Master’s At Houghton College

HOUGHTON, N.Y. —Houghton College announces a new master’s of education program in literacy education.

“Houghton College has long been committed to preparing exceptional teachers for both public and private schools,” said Houghton College President Shirley Mullen. “Our teachers are prepared not only with appropriate expertise in content and pedagogical skills, but also with the work ethic, the character commitments, and the inter-cultural competencies that are needed if our schools are to be effective in this time.”

This new master’s program leads to the master’s degree and to New York state certification in literacy from birth to sixth grade. “The program will be marked by the distinctives that have earned Houghton College its reputation in teacher preparation—high standards, the importance of learning in community, the importance of grounding professional competence in a compelling moral and spiritual vision,” said Mullen.

Classes for the master’s of education program are scheduled to begin in the summer of 2008. The program is designed to be completed in either 14 or 26 months.
“Houghton’s longstanding commitment to excellence will be enhanced by the addition of this graduate program,” said Mullen.

This is the third master’s degree program offered by Houghton College—The Greatbatch School of Music began awarding masters’ degrees in 2005 and the Graduate Theological Studies program begins in fall 2008.
