HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Houghton College Choir and Chamber Orchestra have embarked on a week-long performance tour of Europe.  The tour consists of five performances in famed locations across three different European countries.

The tour began last week in a historic church in El Vendrell, Spain and the performances to follow were hosted in similar settings in Arles and Cannes, France as well as Florence and Rocca di Papa, Italy.

The group is led by their conductor and director of the choral program at Houghton College, Dr. Brandon Johnson.

“We are thrilled to be able offer this gift of music to people not only in the United States, but also in Europe and across the world,” said Johnson.

Widely acclaimed for its artistry and sensitivity, the Houghton College Choir upholds the sacred a cappella choral tradition of its origins, while flexibly embracing the diversity of all styles. Whether performing a renaissance mass setting, baroque motet or an African American spiritual, the choir has built its reputation on the disciplined performance of well-crafted and scared choral music.

The 2009 Tour concert represents that diversity with performances of music written by Johann Sebastian Bach, F. Melius Christiansen, Rene Clausen, Jacobus Gallus, Franz Joseph Haydn, Moses Hogan, Frank Martin, Pietro Mascagni and Knut Nystedt.
