Washington Monthly Ranks Houghton College Among The Top Liberal Arts Colleges Nationwide
HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Houghton College has been ranked 47th out of 253 liberal arts colleges nationwide in The 2009 Washington Monthly College Guide. Among those top colleges and universities located in New York State, Houghton boasts the fourth place spot, following Barnard College, Vassar College and Colgate University.
Washington Monthly utilized three main criteria to develop their rankings: social mobility, research, and service. Social mobility measured the effectiveness of recruiting, retaining and graduating students. Research evaluated the production of cutting-edge scholarship, and service sought out how the institution encourages students to give something back to their country. Each category was weighed equally and the final ranking was a reflection of excellence across all three measures. [www.washingtonmonthly.com]
Paul Glastris, the editor of Washington Monthly, and his staff, were convinced that colleges and universities should be striving for accountability and healthy competition utilizing more meaningful data than other national college ranking systems. Instead of emphasizing class sizes and alumni giving rates, the Washington Monthly College Rankings “aim to provide a measure of not just what college can do for you, but what colleges are doing for the country.” [www.washingtonmonthly.com]
“We are delighted to be highlighted as a top liberal arts college in The 2009 Washington Monthly College Guide,” said Houghton College President Shirley Mullen. “Acknowledgement on the national level truly reflects the distinct education offered at Houghton. This designation is particularly significant as it recognizes and celebrates Houghton’s mission to transform students into young men and women of substance who confidently determine their own future and that of our world.”
Houghton College, located in western New York, offers more than 40 undergraduate majors and programs, as well as numerous graduate study programs in the area of music.
