Dr. Joy Moore To Speak During
Christian Life Emphasis Week
HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Houghton College and the
Houghton Wesleyan Church welcome
Dr. Joy Moore as the featured speaker for Christian Life
Emphasis Week held September 6 – 9, 2009. Dr. Moore is the
current associate dean for Black Church Studies and Church
Relations at the Divinity School at Duke University.
Dr. Moore will share the idea of Remembering Rightly: Christian Community in a Post-Christian Culture. “What God is doing in the world has always been to form a people with whom God so evidently abides that the world gets a glimpse of good,” states Dr. Moore. “But for 21st century believers, it seems everything must change. We live in a world that favors individualism, lacks intimacy, and demands immediate gratification. The challenge for the next generation of Christians is to remember rightly in a world where everyone does what is right in their own eyes.”
Her addresses will challenge listeners to determine whether it is possible to stand firm while moving forward by looking at culture, humanity, eternal life, worship, marriage, and getting ahead in a secular culture. Christian Life Emphasis Week will begin on Sunday, September 6 at the 8:20 a.m., 9:40 a.m. and 11 a.m. services at the Houghton Wesleyan Church. Services will continue Sunday night through Wednesday morning at Wesley Chapel on the Houghton College campus.
Dr. Moore holds a Bachelor of Arts in education and mathematics from National Louis University in Evanston, Illinois, a Master of Divinity from Garrett-Evangelical Seminary, and a Ph.D. in practical theology with an emphasis in homiletics from Brunel University/London School of Theology in London, England.
