Chanticleer was founded in 1978 in San Francisco, and named after the clear-singing rooster in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. As the San Francisco Chronicle succinctly says, “They are, to put it directly, one of the world’s best.” A guaranteed crowd-pleaser all over the world, Chanticleer has been selling out houses from Brisbane to Boston, Paris to Portland for more than three decades. Last season, the ensemble toured 27 states and appeared at prestigious festivals in France, Germany, Poland and Latvia, followed by debuts in five cities in the People’s Republic of China and three appearances in Ireland. They were named “2008 Ensemble of the Year” by Musical America, an award of considerable distinction.
