David Smith '73 Honored With
Induction Into Hall Of Honor
HOUGHTON, N.Y. – David Smith ’73 was
inducted into the Houghton College Hall of Honor on Saturday,
October 3, 2009 for his outstanding achievement in baseball and
basketball as a student at the college. His continued
contributions to the western New York community as a
servant-leader also make him a stand-out worthy of recognition.
While at Houghton, David excelled on the baseball field. He had a career batting average of .353, led the team in walks for two of his seasons, and was seven for eight stolen bases his last year on the team. He was named an All-American by the American Association of College Baseball Coaches. David was also a strong basketball player. He led the team in rebounds for three consecutive years and is in the record books with 607 career rebounds. He was also named to the Private College Athletic Conference All-Conference Team.
David has served at IBM Corporation in Rochester for 37 years holding various management positions in operations, information technology, logistics and manufacturing. He has been awarded the IBM Market Driven Quality Award; the IBM Award of Excellence; and the Leadership Award, Boy Scouts of America Longs Peak Council. He graduated from IBM’s Advanced Management School and the IBM Manufacturing Business Development Program at Tuck Business School/Dartmouth.
Outside the professional world, David has used his effective leadership and people skills serving as an active teacher at the Webster Bible Church for the last 12 years. He and his wife, Cindy ’73, have four children: Melissa ’01 (Rob ’00) Luckey, Amy ’03 (Shane ’03) DeHaven, Jordan ’08, and Tyler.
