Dr. Jeremy Begbie - Theology And The Arts

Jeremy BegbieHOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Woolsey Lectures in Theology and Culture at Houghton College bring Dr. Jeremy Begbie to Wesley Chapel, Houghton College Campus for two lecture events. Tuesday, November 17 at 7:30 p.m. features “Living in Hope: Imagining and Embodying God’s New World through the Arts,” followed by a reception in the Center for the Arts Atrium. Wednesday, November 18 at 10:15 a.m., Dr. Begbie will lecture on “Live the Difference,” followed by an open dialogue.  Dr. Begbie conducts his lectures at the piano – utilizing music to further enhance his message. The lectures are free of charge and supported by the Mary Hayes Randall Endowment and the friends of Houghton College.  

A theologian and professionally-trained pianist, Dr. Jeremy Begbie demonstrates how music can help unlock the truths of the Christian gospel. He is the Thomas A. Langford Research Professor of Theology at Duke Divinity School, and teaches systematic theology specializing in the interface between theology and the arts. His particular research interests are in the interplay between music and theology. Dr. Begbie has served as the Associate Principal of Ridley Hall, Cambridge and an Affiliated Lecturer at the University of Cambridge, England, teaching systematic theology.  He is also Founder and director of the international research project, Duke Initiatives in Theology and the Arts, whose focus is on the arts and their increasing role in the way we access and react to the world around us. Theology and the Arts aims to show how the arts of our time can help us discover and explore afresh the riches of the Christian faith.  Begbie has a Ph.D. from the University of Aberdeen and holds other post graduate degrees from the Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music, and the Royal School of Church Music, all of which are located in London.

He has authored a variety of books and articles:  Voicing Creation’s Praise: Towards a Theology of the Arts; Theology, Music and Time and most recently, Resounding Truth: Christian Wisdom in the World of Music, which won a Christianity Today 2008 Book Award. Begbie has taught widely in the United Kingdom, North America and South Africa, specializing in multimedia performance-lectures.
