Students Named  As NAIA Scholar-Athletes

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Twenty-three Houghton College student-athletes have been honored for their efforts in the classroom and on the playing field. Multiple players from all of Houghton’s five fall sports teams were nominated and chosen as Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes. The Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete Award is given to student-athletes who are in their junior or senior year, have a cumulative 3.5 grade point average, and have been nominated by their coach.

“We are very excited to see another great representation of student-athletes being recognized for excellence in the classroom,” remarked Houghton athletic director H. “Skip” Lord. “We make it a priority in the athletic department to emphasize excellence – spiritually, academically and athletically.”

The cross country team honored three runners as NAIA Student-Athletes: Kaitlin Fadden ’10 (Hyde Park, N.Y.), Audrey Gillette ’11 (Moores, N.Y.), and Douglas Landry Jarvis ’10 (Elgin, Ontario).

The women’s volleyball team was represented with five athletes: Lenore Bassett ’10 (Laconia, N.H.), Hannah Gardner ’11 (Blacksburg, Va.), Ashley Kuvshinikov ’10 (Edinboro, Pa.), Holly Motheral ’10 (Paris, Ontario), and Meghan Phipps ’11 (Lockport, N.Y.).

The Highlander men’s soccer team has seven student-athlete award recipients: Daniel Brubaker ’10 (Shippensburg, Pa.), Justin Farnsworth ’10 (Spencerport, N.Y.), Bryan    Gerlach ’10 (Shippensburg, Pa.), Steven Grudda ’10 (Albion, Maine), Aaron Martin ’11 (Houghton, N.Y.), Steve Ross ’10 (Auburn, N.Y.), and Jesse Woolsey ’10 (Houghton, N.Y.).

The Houghton women’s soccer team was represented with four athletes: Jennifer L.     Miller ’10 (Webster, N.Y.), Megan Short ’11 (Canandaigua, N.Y.), Kaitlin Smith ’10 (Woodhull, N.Y.) and Carolynn Tomlinson ’11 (Victor, N.Y.).

Four field hockey players were named student-athletes: Ashley Hoffman ’10 (Webster,  N.Y.), Jennifer Huyett ’11 (Stevens, Pa.), Emily Leonard ’11 (Middleboro, Mass.), and Emily VanEenwyk ’10 (Bergen, N.Y.).

“We are incredibly proud of the academic and athletic achievements of our students,” commented Dr. Sharra Hynes, vice president of student life. “These students have accomplished great things both inside and outside of the classroom, and the use of their gifts and talents is bringing ultimate glory to God. At Houghton, scholar-athletes are not an unusual occurrence, but the number of students receiving the award this year is outstanding.”
