Philharmonia Presents Winter Concert

Philharmonia ConcertHOUGHTON, N.Y. – Houghton College’s Philharmonia will perform a winter concert Friday, February 19, 2010 at 8 p.m. in Wesley Chapel. The theme of this concert is From the Frigid Lands and is the first in a series of performances by Philharmonia to be held this semester.

Philharmonia will perform music featuring four Scandinavian composers: Jean Sibelius of Finland, Carl Nielsen of Denmark, and Norwegians Geirr Tveitt and Edvard Grieg.  Carter Penn’s 1998 piece Slalom is a highlight, a work that musically illustrates alpine skiing. Pieces from Siblelius’ Valse Triste and the popular Finlandia as well as the Prelude from Grieg’s Holberg Suite will also be performed. Dr. Paul Shewan of Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, N.Y., will join the ensemble as a guest conductor.

As a part of this concert series, Houghton College’s Philharmonia will perform at Attica Central School on Saturday, March 20.  On the afternoon of April 18, they will play at the Mary Seaton Room at Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo, N.Y.

Philharmonia is a group of 50-60 orchestral musicians comprised of mostly college students, both music majors and non-music majors; players from the surrounding community also are a part of the ensemble.
