Five Students Recognized as NAIA Scholar-Athletes

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Five Houghton College student-athletes have been recognized as scholar-athletes for their hard work and dedication on the court as well as in the classroom. The Highlanders are represented with three athletes from the women’s basketball team and two athletes from the men’s basketball team receiving the Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete Award. This award is presented to students who are in their junior or senior year, hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above and have obtained a nomination from their coach.

“They are excellent students, committed to hard work as leaders and members of their team, involved in campus activities beyond the classroom or sport, and they represent Christ by honoring Him through their actions,” remarks assistant athletic director and men’s basketball head coach Brad Zarges.

The men’s basketball team was represented with two athletes: senior forward Daniel Tomlinson (Bloomfield, NY) and junior guard Ryan Shay (Andover, NY).

The women’s basketball team had three award recipients: senior guard Lisa Skrypnik (Albion, NY), senior guard Rachel Henning (Ganesvoort, NY), and junior guard Shannon Daugherty (Houghton, NY).

"We are very proud of the academic accomplishments of all our student-athletes. As a group they are representative of the serious students that make up Houghton College's student-body. These, who have been recognized as NAIA Scholar-Athletes, are great examples of what we hope to stand for as a department. They are to be congratulated for maintaining a high degree of academic success, competing on college-level athletic programs and living lives of service to the campus and surrounding community,” concluded athletic director and women’s basketball coach H. “Skip” Lord.
