Alumni Return to Houghton
HOUGHTON, N.Y. – More than 350 alumni and family members spent this past weekend back at Houghton taking in a few classes, fellowshipping in the residence halls, and enjoying meals together. Graduates from 1936 to 2005 traveled from as far as Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, to remember their days as students and to celebrate God’s faithfulness in the years in between.
Alumni were treated to seminars from alumni, faculty, and students on topics such as metaphysical poetry, Russian culture, a Christian response to Islam, and ongoing research in physics, chemistry, biology, and computer science being conducted by current Houghton students and faculty. Seminars were well attended and questions and discussions lasted well beyond scheduled class times.
A hymn sing was held at the Houghton Wesleyan Church and led by long time Houghton College Dean of Students and class advisor to the 25-year reunion class of 1985, Bob Danner. Dr. David Childs ’60 played both piano and organ, and the Vogan Brass, led by Bob Vogan ’60 and featuring Vogan family members from Houghton classes of ’84, ’85, ’87, ’88, and ’10 (and a few younger Vogans perhaps destined for Houghton), also helped accompany the hundreds of alumni voices present.
A Question & Answer session held on the steps of Luckey Building with President Shirley A. Mullen ’76, an alumni talent and variety show featuring acts by alumni from ’55 to ’10, and many other events for alumni and their families rounded out the weekend.
This year’s celebration would not have succeeded without the help of many alumni volunteers. Thanks are in order to all of the alumni who helped to call their classmates and helped to organize reunion activities. If your class year ends in a ‘1’ or a ‘6’, and you would like to help with your reunion, please contact us at alumni@houghton.edu.
