NAIA National Tournament
Houghton def. Robert Morris, 2-0
OLATHE, Kan. --
The Highlanders advanced to the quarterfinals of the
NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship Tournament
with a 2-0 win over No. 13 seed Robert Morris (Ill.) on
Thursday.
Senior Heidi Toth converted a penalty
kick in the 15th minute to put the Highlanders up 1-0
and sophomore Bethany Kowalczyk tallied her team-leading
29th goal off an assist from freshman Hannah Swift and
junior Krista Fowlkes in the 40th minute.
"It was a back and forth game," said
Houghton coach David Lewis. "They play very direct,
while we are more of a possession team. They had a one
on one opportunity in the first half with our keeper,
but [Meg Radimer] came up with a big save.
"Fortunately our girls played well. They
came to play."
The Highlanders outshot the Eagles,
17-10, and had a dominant 10-0 advantage in corners.
Junior keeper Meg Radimer made three
saves to register her 15th shutout of the season. It was
the team's 16th shutout.
The team also set a school record for
wins in a season, moving to 20-0-1 on the year. Robert
Morris ends the year with a record of 17-7-1.
Houghton will play the winner of
tomorrow's second-round game between No. 5 Lindsey
Wilson (16-4-1) and No. 12 Westmont on Saturday, Nov. 19
at 8:15 p.m. Eastern.

November 5
NAIA Region IX
Championship
Houghton def. Tiffin,
2-0
HOUGHTON, N.Y. –
Houghton clinched an automatic berth to the NAIA Women’s
Soccer National Tournament with a 2-0 win over Tiffin in
the Region IX title game at Burke Field.
Junior Krista Fowlkes
opened the scoring in the sixth minute, ripping a
12-yard shot past Tiffin keeper Jennifer Rosselit. The
score would remain 1-0 until the 70th minute
when freshman Hannah Swift ran past the Dragon defenders
and slipped a low shot past Rosselit. Junior Bridget
Toth was credited with the assists on both Highlander
goals.
Meg Radimer made three
saves, including a key diving stop in the first half, to
register her 14th shutout of the season. The
Highlanders (19-0-1) outshot the Dragons, 12-3, and had
a 9-3 advantage in corners.
This will be the
Highlanders’ third-straight appearance at nationals, the
sixth in the last eight years, and the seventh in
program history.
The 19 wins ties a
program record for wins in a season.
The national tournament
takes place in Olathe, Kan., November 16-22.
November 4
NAIA Region IX
Semifinal
Houghton def. Ohio
Dominican, 4-1
HOUGHTON, N.Y. –
The Highlanders made head coach David Lewis the winningest coach in NAIA
women’s soccer history [see
article] with a 4-1 victory over No. 4 seed Ohio
Dominican in the NAIA Region IX semifinals.
Sophomore Bethany
Kowalczyk scored three times and added an assist to lead
the NAIA No. 2 Highlanders. Junior Bridget Toth added
the fourth goal, while juniors Britany Crozier and
Krista Fowlkes and freshman Hannah Swift added assists.
Jen Burgei scored the
lone goal for the Panthers.
Junior keeper Meg Radimer,
who came out of the game for 15 minutes after a
first-half collision, made three saves and allowed one
goal. Freshman Rebecca Dix did not face a shot in her 15
minutes of action.
Houghton outshot Ohio
Dominican, 19-6, and had a 7-1 advantage in corners.
The top-seeded
Highlanders will take on Tiffin in the NAIA Region IX
title game. The No. 3 seed Dragons tied No. 2 Seton
Hill, 0-0, but advanced with a 7-6 decision in a penalty
kick shootout.
October 29
AMC Qualifier
Houghton def. Daemen,
5-0
HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The NAIA No. 2 Highlanders advanced to their 13th-straight
region final four with a 5-0 win over Daemen in an AMC
Qualifying game on Saturday.
The win was also
monumental for head coach David Lewis, who moved into a
first place tie on the NAIA women’s soccer all-time wins
list with 233. He tied former Pacific Lutheran head
coach Colleen Hacker.
All five goals against
Daemen came in the first half. Freshman Hannah Swift
scored twice, sophomore Bethany Kowaczyk added a goal
and an assist, while junior Britany Crozier and freshman
Mandy Lewandowski each scored once. Junior Krista
Fowlkes dished out two assists and junior Bridget Toth
had one helper.
Houghton (17-0-1) outshot
Daemen, 15-4, with junior keeper Meg Radimer making
three saves and registering her 13th shutout
of the year.
Daemen finishes the
season with a 10-8 record.
As the No. 1 seed,
Houghton will host the Region IX Final Four and
Championship on Friday, Nov. 4 and Saturday, Nov. 5.
They play the winner of Tuesday’s play-in game between
Lyndon State (Vt.) and Ohio Dominican.
October 24
Houghton def. Ursuline,
7-0
PEPPER PIKE, Ohio – Houghton (16-0-1 overall; 9-0 AMC North) wrapped up its second-straight
undefeated regular season, and the fourth in program
history, with a 7-0 win over Ursuline College in AMC
women’s soccer action Monday.
The win also marked the
fourth-straight time the Highlanders have finished
undefeated in conference play.
Against Ursuline,
freshman Stacey Litz tallied two goals and an assist,
sophomore Bethany Kowalczyk scored a goal and assisted
on two others, while junior Krista Fowlkes, sophomore
Erin Ross, freshman Hannah Swift, and sophomore Rebecca
Smith also scored. Junior Bridget Toth and freshman
Mandy Lewandowski added an assist each.
Junior Meg Radimer played
45 minutes in goal, registering one save. Freshman
Rebecca Dix did not face any shots in 25 minutes of
goalkeeping action in the second half. The game was
called by the officials after 70 minutes.
October 22
Houghton def. Seton
Hill, 5-0
HOUGHTON, N.Y. –
The Highlanders handed Seton Hill its first loss of the season, 5-0, on
a rained-soaked and muddy Burke Field on Saturday.
The win assured the
Highlanders of first place in the AMC North Division.
Sophomore Bethany
Kowalczyk tallied two goals and two assists, while
juniors Bridget Toth, Krista Fowlkes, and Britany
Crozier scored once apiece. Toth added an assist as did
junior Kim Gehl and freshman Stacey Litz.
Junior Meg Radimer was
credited with her 12th shutout of the year,
stopping three shots.
The Griffins had come
into the game with a perfect 15-0 mark and had outscored
their opponents, 74-8.
October 19
Houghton def. Roberts
Wesleyan, 3-2 (OT)
N. CHILI, N.Y. –
The Highlanders dominated play against the Raiders from
Roberts Wesleyan, but needed overtime to pull out a 3-2
win in AMC women’s soccer action Wednesday.
NAIA No. 3 Houghton
jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the game’s first 16 minutes
on goals from Krista Fowlkes and Rebecca Smith and
looked to have things well in hand. The Raiders,
however, responded with a goal by Donna Bertalone just
22 seconds later to pull within one, and Nicole Drenth
tied the score in the 82nd minute to send the
game to overtime.
Fowlkes tallied her
second of the game just six minutes into the first
overtime, off an assist from Jenn Switzer, to give the
Highlanders the win.
Meg Radimer did not make
any saves, as the Highlanders outshot the Raiders, 24-4,
on the night. Roberts scored on their only two shots on
goal. Corners were 9-0 in favor of Houghton (14-0-1
overall; 7-0 AMC North).
October 15
Houghton def. Martin
Methodist, 1-0
BRISTOL, Va. – Sophomore Bethany Kowalczyk scored in the 72nd minute to
give the fifth-ranked Highlanders a 1-0 win over No. 3
Martin Methodist in the championship of the Virginia
Intermont Women’s Soccer Tournament.
It was the first loss for
the Redhawks, who had beaten six top-25 teams heading
into the game.
The play was even early
on, with Martin Methodist holding a 2-0 shots advantage
at the half.
The second 45 minutes was
controlled by the Highlanders, who outshot the Redhawks,
7-3, after the break, with Kowalczyk heading in her 21st
goal of the year off a direct kick from Heidi Toth. The
goals was also Kowalczyk’s 50th of her
career.
Houghton keeper Meg
Radimer made five stops to get her 11th
shutout of the year. Houghton had a 9-4 advantage in
corners.
Houghton improves to
13-0-1, while Martin Methodist falls to 13-1-0.
October 14
Houghton def. Virginia
Intermont, 2-0
BRISTOL, Va. –
The Highlanders got two second-half goals from sophomore Bethany
Kowalczyk to knock off Virginia Intermont, 2-0, in the
first round of the Virginia Intermont Women’s Soccer
Tournament.
Kowalczyk scored in the
50th minute off an assist from Britany
Crozier and closed the scoring with her 20th
of the year in the 58th minute.
Houghton outshot VIC,
11-6, and corners were even at two apiece.
The fifth-ranked
Highlanders improve to 12-0-1, while the Cobras fall to
8-6.
October 8
Houghton def. Carlow,
8-0
HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Six different Highlanders scored in an 8-0 Homecoming rout of Carlow
College on Saturday.
Heidi Toth picked up
where she left off last game, scoring twice and
registering an assist. Bethany Kowalczyk also scored
twice, her 17th and 18th goals of
the season, while Hannah Swift, Krista Fowlkes, Britany
Crozier, and Mandy Lewandowski each scored once. Fowlkes
added two assists. Bridget Toth and Erin Ross also
picked up assists on the afternoon.
Houghton outshot the
Celtics, 40-0, and had a 7-0 advantage in corners.
Meghan Radimer had a
quiet afternoon to get her ninth shutout of the year.
The seventh-ranked
Highlanders are now 11-0-1 on the year.
October 1
Houghton def. Notre
Dame, 7-0
S. EUCLID, Ohio –
Senior Heidi Toth scored three goals to help the No. 7
Highlanders remain undefeated in the AMC North with a
7-0 win over Notre Dame College.
The Highlanders got goals
from Toth and Bethany Kowalczyk in the first three
minutes to put the game away early. Jenn Switzer
assisted on both tallies. Kowalczyk added her
team-leading 16th goal in the 14th
minute on an assist from Bridget Toth and Heidi Toth
scored her second of the game in the 20th
minute with the assist being credited to Kowalczyk.
The second half featured
another goal by Heidi Toth off an assist from sister
Bridget, an unassisted tally by Krista Fowlkes, and the
first-career goal by freshman Rebecca Buszka. Switzer
and Hannah Swift picked up the assist on Buszka’s goal.
Meg Radimer faced just
one shot on goal and registered her eighth shutout of
the year. Houghton finished with a 17-1 advantage in
shots.
September 29
Houghton def. Point
Park, 7-0
PITTSBURGH, Pa. –
Houghton received two goals each from junior Bridget
Toth and sophomore Bethany Kowalczyk to shut out Point
Park, 7-0, on the road.
Toth opened the scoring
in the 4th minute with her second goal of the
year and Kowalczyk added back-to-back tallies in the 10th
and 12th minutes to give the Highlanders a
comfortable advantage. Kowalcyzk leads the team with 14
goals. Sophomore Erin Ross finished the first-half
scoring with her second of the year in the 38th
minute.
Toth scored again 12
minutes into the second half, before sophomores Andrea
Duryea (73rd minute) and Ashley LaBoda (77th
minute) ended the scoring with their first Highlander
goals. Duryea was playing in her first game since being
injured in the season opener.
Junior Krista Fowlkes and
senior Heidi Toth each tallied two assists, while
freshman Hannah Swift, sophomore Rebecca Smith, and
junior Britany Crozier each picked up one helper.
The Highlanders put 31
shots on net and outshot the Pioneers, 41-0, for the
game. They also had a 15-0 advantage in corners.
Houghton keeper Meghan Radimer faced no shots in
registering her seventh shutout of the season.
September 24
Houghton def. Geneva,
3-0
HOUGHTON, N.Y.
- The Highlanders
continued their winning ways this weekend as they
tallied three second half goals in their AMC North
victory over Geneva, 3-0. It was the 6th
shutout for the women this season.
Most of the game was
controlled by the Highlanders (8-0-1, 3-0 AMC North) but
they were held from scoring on Geneva goalkeeper, Amber
Weaver, in the first half. In the 55th
minute, though, Krista Fowlkes scored the Highlanders
first goal of the game. That would be all that the
Highlanders needed as Houghton’s defense held the Golden
Tornadoes to only three shots on goal. Erin Ross added
an insurance goal in the 71st minute on an
assist by Hannah Swift. Mandy Lewandowski put the game
away in the 77th minute off a pass from
Stacey Litz.
Meghan Radimer had three
saves to bring her shutout total to six on the season.
The 9th-ranked Highlanders outshot the Golden
Tornados, 22-3, and had a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.
September 13
Houghton def. Daemen,
6-0
W. SENECA, N.Y.
– Freshman Hannah Swift tallied her first career hat trick and sophomore
Bethany Kowalczyk scored twice to lead the 10th-ranked
Highlanders to a 6-0 AMC North women’s soccer victory
over Daemen College.
It took most of the
opening half for the Highlanders (7-0-1 overall; 2-0 AMC
North) to feel out the Wildcats, who came into the game
with a 3-2 record. Swift opened the scoring in the 28th
minute, off an assist from Kowalczyk, and netted an
unassisted goal just two minutes later. Kowalczyk would
add her first of the day just four minutes later on a
pass from junior Jenn Switzer as the Highlanders grabbed
a 3-0 lead at the break.
The second half opened
with another 25 minutes of scoreless action before the
Highlanders finished off the hosts with three goals in a
16-minute span. Kowalczyk put in her team-leading 12th
of the year, taking a long punt from junior keeper
Meghan Radimer in the 70th minute, Swift
netted her third off an assist from junior Britany
Crozier in the 80th minute, and junior
Bridget Toth closed the scoring in the 86th
minute, converting a pass from freshman Mandy
Lewandowski.
Radimer made three saves
for her fifth shutout of the year. The Highlanders
outshot the Wildcats, 30-5.
September 10
Houghton def. Mt.
Vernon Nazarene, 4-0
MT. VERNON, Ohio – The Highlanders grabbed the championship of the Mt. Vernon Nazarene W.g.
Grinders Women’s Soccer Classic with a 4-0 win over the
host Cougars.
It took a half for the 10th-ranked
Highlanders to get untracked offensively, but the
visitors netted four goals over a 15-minute span to pull
away. Sophomore Rebecca Smith scored off assist from
Krista Fowlkes in the 50th minute to open the
scoring, before junior Bridget Toth fed sophomore
Bethany Kowalczyk for back-to-back goals in the 54th
and 62nd minutes. Senior Heidi Toth closed
the scoring with an unassisted tally in the 65th
minute.
Junior keeper Meghan
Radimer stopped four shots for her fourth shutout.
Cougar keeper Krysti Wilson had nine saves.
Houghton outshot the
Cougars, 23-5, and had a 7-1 advantage in corners.
Bridget Toth was named tournament MVP,
while Kowalczyk, Jenn Switzer, and Kim Gehl made the
all-tournament team.
September 9
Houghton def. Malone,
4-1
MT. VERNON, Ohio
– The Highlanders used three first-half goals to earn a
4-1 win over Malone on the first day of the Mt. Vernon
Nazarene W.g. Grinders Women’s Soccer Classic.
Junior Krista Fowlkes
didn’t waste much time in getting the Highlanders on the
board, notching her first goal of the season just four
minutes in. Junior Britany Crozier following with her
fourth of the year off an assist from Heidi Toth in the
16th minute. Freshman Hannah Swift tallied
her first career goal in the 36th minute to
close the first-half scoring. Erin Ross and Fowlkes
picked up assists.
The second half began
with a goal by Malone forward Fleur-Wynne Morgan in the
57th minute, but Swift answered off an assist
from junior Bridget Toth in the 77th minute.
Meghan Radimer had two
saves for the Highlanders, who outshot the Pioneers,
23-5. Samantha Brown notched seven saves for Malone.
September 3
Houghton def. Ohio
Dominican, 3-0
HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Junior Britany Crozier scored twice to lead the Highlanders to a 3-0
win over AMC South Division opponent Ohio Dominican.
Crozier opened the
scoring in the 10th minute, taking a pass
from senior Heidi Toth and slipping the ball past
Panther keeper Krissi Sparks. Sophomore Bethany
Kowalczyk added her team-leading eighth goal of the
season just two minutes into the second half, taking a
long pass from sophomore Rebecca Smith and outrunning
two Panther defenders after an attempted offsides trap.
Crozier scored her third
goal of the season just five minutes later, heading in a
perfectly placed corner from junior Krista Fowlkes.
Junior Meghan Radimer
made three saves in net to register her third shutout
of the season. Sparks stopped six shots for Ohio
Dominican.
September 1
Houghton def. Roberts
Wesleyan, 3-0
HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Highlanders scored three goals over the final 30 minutes to pull
away from Roberts Wesleyan in a non-conference match on
Thursday.
Houghton (3-0-1)
dominated the first half of play, and had several
chances in the box, but their shots couldn’t find the
net. Sophomore Bethany Kowalczyk, who sent several shots
just wide in the first half, finally broke through in
the 58th minute, stealing a Roberts’ pass
just over midfield and beating the keeper one-on-one.
Freshman Mandy Lewandowski tallied her first career goal
20 minutes later off an assist from freshman Hannah
Swift, and Kowalczyk closed the scoring with her seventh
goal of the season in the 87th minute on a
beautiful chip over the keeper and into the upper 90.
Senior Heidi Toth picked up the assist.
Junior keeper Meghan
Radimer made two saves to get the shutout. Roberts’
keeper Marcey Furlow stopped three shots.
The Highlanders outshot
the Raiders, 14-5, and had a 17-1 advantage in corners.
August 27
Houghton def. St.
Vincent, 4-1
HOUGHTON, N.Y. –
Houghton women’s soccer improved to 2-0-1 on the season
with a 4-1 home-opening win over AMC North Division foe
St. Vincent on Saturday.
Sophomore Bethany
Kowalczyk scored twice on the afternoon, bringing her
season goal total to five. Junior Britany Crozier and
senior Heidi Toth tallied their first goals of the
season for the 11th ranked Highlanders.
Juniors Krista Fowlkes, Kim Gehl, and Bridget Toth each
had assists.
Allison Lachat scored the
lone goal for the Bearcats, who drop to 0-1 on the
season.
Meghan Radimer made three
saves in 90 minutes. Jessica Urban (74 minutes; 6 saves,
4 goals allowed) and Abby Chabitnoy (16 minutes, 1 save)
split time in net for St. Vincent.
Houghton had a 16-6
advantage in shots and a 6-1 edge in corners.
August 25
Houghton tied
Madonna, 0-0
LIVONIA, Mich. –
The 11th ranked Highlanders battled to a 0-0
draw with Madonna University on Thursday.
Houghton, playing their
second game in as many days, fell to 1-0-1 while Madonna
opened the year 0-0-1.
The Highlanders outshot
the Crusaders, 13-7, with sophomore Bethany Kowalczyk
mustering the best scoring chances for the visitors,
sending one shot over the bar and another just wide.
Junior goalkeeper Meghan Radimer made several key saves
for Houghton, including an impressive stop on a
one-on-one in the second half, to preserve the tie.
The Highlanders open
their home schedule with an AMC North Division match
against St. Vincent on Saturday at 1 p.m.
August 24
Houghton def. Siena
Heights, 3-1
ADRIAN, Mich. –
Bethany Kowalczyk picked up where she left off in 2004,
registering a hattrick in leading the No. 11 Highlanders
to a 3-1 season-opening win at Siena Heights University.
The sophomore forward
scored in the fifth, 26th, and 43rd
minutes. Heidi Toth and Krista Fowlkes assisted on
Kowalczyk’s second and third goals, respectively.
Meghan Radimer came up
big down the stretch, clearing several dangerous balls
out of the box. She played the full 90 minutes,
finishing with three saves.
Houghton had an 18-5
advantage in shots. |
