In Memory of Allen Smith

Allen Smith ’43, former print shop manager for 40 years at Houghton, passed away on Friday, December 30, 2011. He was 90. “He volunteered in order to save the church money so that more could be spent on missions and other ways of helping people know Christ. He never wanted accolades or recognition; he just did it because it needed to be done and he could do it”.

Houghton College is pleased to announce a donation of African art from the late Charles Hudgins, who bequeathed his entire collection to the college shortly before his death in June 2011. … The collection is as prolific as the multiple African countries it spans, with such mediums as wood, clay, metal, fabric and ivory.

Praxis Week 2012: Listening

During the week of January 16-20, 2012, Houghton College will hold its fourth Praxis Week. “Praxis,” which means “reflection aimed toward action,” is an annual event focusing on communal conversations about things that matter. Praxis will feature a variety of speakers and over 17 events, including workshops, music and art demonstrations, and various other events. 

Many of you have seen Glen Avery ’72 behind the research help desk at the library, ready with an answer to any question you might have. If you were on campus in the spring, you’d know from an article in the Star that Glen ran a marathon in Antarctica earlier this year. Read more

Heaven and Nature Sing!

I recently attended the beautiful and annual Houghton Christmas Prism concert, joyously titled Heaven and Nature Sing! The concert, complete with music, dance, artistic props and poetry, was stunning to the ears, eyes and heart. I left the chapel feeling the love and joy of Christmas, grateful once again that God gave us the gift of his precious son, Jesus. Read more

A decade since the devastating September 11, 2001 attacks and nearly 70 years after the Pearl Harbor bombings, the topic of military defense is still as relevant as ever. Responding to the fears and uncertainties of nuclear weapons, the National Association of Evangelicals issued a Consultation on Nuclear Weapons in order to produce a document of its stance. Houghton College senior Megan Toombs ’12 was recommended to the NAE and joined the discussion alongside a team of NAE representatives, ex-military personnel and Christian individuals of all generations.
