What is Make a Difference Day – MaDD is a the largest national service day in the U.S. in which hundreds of thousands of people work together to serve their local communities through a day of volunteerism.  Last year, Houghton College, Alfred State College and Alfred University joined together to help positively impact Allegany County.

We here at Houghton, with the support of the SGA and Student Life, see Make a Difference Day as an opportunity to unite as a college community and positively impact Allegany County.   While we have many groups and individuals on campus that serve throughout the year, and we certainly celebrate those, there is something special about coming together as a community unified through service.

Through service, we are taking the time to celebrate the beauty in nature, and the beauty of the people that reside in our local communities.  As we saw last year, this is a day that we can reach people who have never heard of Houghton College.

In addition, the success of last year’s event created connections and synergies with individuals and organizations that continue to foster and grow.  Houghton has joined with The Allegany County Office for the Aging, and the Western Steuben Allegany Rural Health Network to start providing wheel chair ramps for senior citizens who do not have access to their homes.  We are working on developing innovative internships with local health providers and so much more.

So we ask you today to sign up and join your fellow classmates, professors and Houghton staff members to join together for the second annual Make a Difference Day.
