A Letter from the Director
I was born in Niagara Falls, N.Y., and Niagara Falls State Park was just a short bicycle ride from my childhood home. Despite the close proximity I hardly ever visited; like most others in Western New York we only visited the Falls when we had guests in from out of town. As I have gotten older, though, I try to visit the Falls at least once every year – whether I have out-of-town guests or not. One of my favorite things about visiting the Falls on a warm summer day is feeling the refreshing mist from the rapids on my face even before I’ve gotten close enough to see the brink of the Falls. All you have to do is be close, and you will feel the mist, and it reminds me of how powerful the Falls are.
In the same way, it is our goal that pastors and churches near and far will feel the refreshing spray of the mist from what is happening at Houghton College. Even if you never make it all the way to our campus, I hope we can find a way to bless you where you are. This year, after 12 years of pastoral ministry in urban, suburban, and rural churches, I came back to my alma mater to help Houghton College provide Christ-centered ministry resources – from faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of Houghton College – for the benefit of pastors and churches. I view my role as being a pastor to pastors, to come alongside to support churches, as well as to learn about the exciting things that God is doing through your ministries.
Houghton College has long offered ministry conferences, workshops, symposiums, youth events, personal retreats, a bureau of speaker’s who are available to speak in Sunday worship or other church events, and numerous scholarships for incoming students. We also now will be sharing many new resources online through “Ministry Resources from Houghton College” on Facebook, as well as exploring new and creative ways that we can help assist, strengthen, and encourage churches and those who lead them.
These are challenging days to be a pastor, and Houghton is here to help with no strings attached. We want to be a source of refreshing for you and your ministry. And we’re not going to wait to be asked.
