Why Sports Ministry?

The prevalence and popularity of sport within all cultures provides a unique relational platform for the church to engage and invest in lives. A statistic, utilizing only one sport: There are more member countries belonging to FIFA (the world’s soccer affiliation) than there are members of the United Nations (the world’s largest political/government organization): Current FIFA Membership = 211; Current United Nations Membership = 193.

Academic Sports Ministry Minor at Houghton College:

  • Provides a theological foundation for the practice of sports ministry – explores the historic developments within the sports ministry field along with current trends

  • Examines evangelistic and discipleship methodologies utilized within a sports ministry context

  • Provides exposure to and hands-on experiential learning opportunities within a variety of sports ministry settings; i.e.:

- Cross-Cultural Missions
- Local Church Sports/Recreational Ministries
- Camping & Community Recreation Programs
- Coaching
- Equestrian
- Parachurch Sports Ministry Organizations – over 300 worldwide, such as: Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), Athletes in Action (AIA), Missionary Athletes International (MAI), Sports Friends – the sports ministry branch of SIM, Push the Rock, Ignite International, On Goal, Score International, Climbing for Christ, Surge International…

Sports Ministry Minor Academic Requirements:

Required (8 hours):

  • CRFM 325 Bible Study and Teaching Methods
  • PHED/CRFM 227 The Integration of Faith and Sport
  • PHED/CRFM 275 Methods and Administration of Sports Ministry

Select one of the following (4 hours):

  • CRFM 341/342 Theological Explorations in Youth Cultures and Ministry I, II
  • THEL 313 Systematic Theology

Select at least two from the following (4-8 hours):

  • INCL XXX Intercultural course recommended by dept.
  • MISS 222 The Contemporary Church in Missions
  • PHED 305 Sports Ministry Field Practicum**
  • PHED 306 Principles of Coaching & Sports Management
  • REC 227 Outdoor Leadership Training
  • REC 240 Administration of Organized Camps

**With approval the practicum can be fulfilled through one of the following provided the course has a sufficient sports ministry component:

  • CRFM 442 Internship in Christian Formation
  • MISS 311 Cross Cultural Field Experience
  • INCL/INTR 311 Intercultural Experience
