Highlanders Capture 1st Win Against #7 Lindsey Wilson

Box Score

COLUMBIA, K.Y. -- Houghton (N.Y.) College capitalized on one of their two shots to defeat Lindsey Wilson College 1-0 on Thursday night at Lindsey Wilson Park.

The No. 7-ranked Blue Raiders out-shot the visiting Highlanders 19-2 for the match, but they were unable to break through in the season-opener. Lindsey Wilson falls to 0-1-0 on the season.

Houghton forward Bethany Kowalczyk scored her second goal of the year at 23:15 mark to give the No. 6-ranked Highlanders a 1-0 lead. Bridget Toth was accredited with her first assist of the season.

Houghton freshman goalkeeper Becky Wakeman collected seven saves in earning her first career win in goal. LWC freshman goalkeeper Carrie Revlett stopped one Houghton shot, but gave up the game-winner for the loss.

This is a huge win for the women’s program beating LWC who were the NAIA National Champions in 2004.

The women’s next game is Friday August 25th against Cumberland University in Lebanon, TN at 2pm.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
