                 #3 Highlanders defeat Myer’s University, 7-1

Cleveland, OH - The Highlanders took care of business today defeating Myer’s University Mustangs, 7-1. The Mustangs scored their solo goal in the second minute of the game only to awaken the #3 NAIA Houghton Highlander’s from their slumber. The Highlander’s held nothing back laying into the Mustangs with seven unanswered goals.

NAIA First Team All-American Jr. Bethany Kowalczyk (Waterford, PA) led the way scoring a Hat trick. Kowalczyk scored first in the 13th minute off a pass from Sr. Sarah Rowley (Hammondsport, N.Y.) through the defense. Her next two goals were both assisted by Sr. Krista Fowlkes (Lake Placid, FL) in the 51st minute and 62nd minute. These three goals add to Kowalczyk team high ten goals on the season. Kowalczyk now stands at 69 career goals, 13 away from tying Houghton College’s Women’s Soccer record of 82 goals in a career.

Jr. Rebecca Smith (Carlisle, PA) scored her third goal of the season in the 15th minute off an assist by Sr. Bridget Toth (Victor, NY). So. Hannah Swift (Perrysburg, N.Y) scored twice tonight as well; first in the 28th minute off a pass from Sr. Krista Fowlkes (Lake Placid, FL) her third assist of the game and her second goal from a penalty kick in the 50th minute of play. Swift now has 8 goals on the year. Sr. Britnay Crozier (Souderton, PA) scored her second goal of the season in the 67th minute off another pass from Sr. Krista Fowlkes (Lake Placid, FL) for an incredible 4th assist of the game. Fowlkes was everywhere for the Highlanders tonight and now leads the team in assists with 6 on the year.

So. Bethany Studt (Earlville, N.Y.) listed another complete game in the goal allowing only one goal.

The Highlander’s registered 21 total shots for the game 17 of those being on goal.

The Highlanders record now moves to 9-0-1 for the season, with their next game at home against AMC North Division opponent Ursuline College on Burke Field at 2 pm.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique

emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
