              Highlanders Defeat Neighbor Daemen 4-0

Box Score

Houghton, N.Y. The Highlanders came out strong despite the wet conditions on Tuesday night defeating AMC North Division opponent Daemen College 4-0. The Highlanders came out aggressive with multiple shots in the first three minutes.

Jr. Bethany Kowalczyk (Waterford, PA) hit the post twice off early shots.  She continued to lead her team’s offensive drive by shooting with some of her shots being blocked by Wildcats goalkeeper Ally Young.  However, this did not stop the Highlanders.

Sr. Brittany Crozier (Souderton, PA) started off the scoring in the 16th minute.  Crozier took a pass off a free kick from Sr. Bridget Toth (Victor, NY) and was able to put it past the goalkeeper into the corner of the goal.  So. Hannah Swift (Perrysburg, NY) scored the second goal for the Highlanders in the 28th minute by picking up a rebound from the goalkeeper off an outside shot from Kowalczyk and slamming it into the back of the net.  Kowalczyk continued lead her team with shots and came close to scoring in the 30th minute, but Daemen’s goalie made the save by pushing Kowalczyk’s shot into the crossbar.

In the 54th, So. Mandy Lewandowski (North East, PA) took a pass from Sr. Jennifer Switzer (New Milford, NJ) and blasted a shot into the goal from 15 yards out.  Just two minutes later Toth scored off a rebound from another Kowalczyk shot.  The Highlanders did not stop their offensive drive there, however, in the 78th minute, Jr. Andrea Duryea (Washington, NJ) hit the post.  The score remained 4-0, but the Highlanders and their offense did not disappoint the fans.

The Highlanders look to continue their dominance in the National rankings and to better their 11-0-1 record during Homecoming weekend against Milligan College of Tennessee on October 7th at 1PM at Burke Field.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique

emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
